Bertram Allen swept the Eschweiler Masters CSI3* in Eschweiler, Germany with victory in the €67,1000 Masters Tour Grand Prix on Sunday, April 23, 2017 aboard GK Casper.
Allen also won both qualifying classes for the grand prix, on Thursday and Friday, with GK Casper and Christy JNR, respectively. With Ireland’s Denis Lynch placing 2nd in the grand prix, it made for a strong showing for the Irish at Eschweiler. Lynch also placed 2nd to Allen in Friday’s 1.50m CSI3* qualifier.
With a start list of nearly 50 riders, the Masters Tour Grand Prix put forth a solid competition that produced 11 clears to move on to the jumpoff. Allen and Lynch battled it out for the top spot but Allen came under the timers in 35.66 seconds to Lynch’s 36.09. Allen, who has been developing the 9-year-old Holsteiner (Canto x Quantum) since 2015, showed that his next generation of mounts are certainly stars coming into their own.
“Casper was brilliant this weekend,” Allen commented. “I am happy to see another one of the young horses stepping up to a higher level. Having won on Friday, it was great to see him coming out again today.”
Allen’s other winning mount of the weekend, Christy JNR, is an 8-year-old BWP gelding (Indoctro x Clinton I) that he has been bringing along for the same amount of time.
In the grand prix, New Zealand’s Bruce Goodin came 3rd with Centina 10, while David Simpson of Ireland was 4th with Keoki. Paola Amilibia rounded out the top five with Gaudi.
