Also fresh off significant dominance at Spruce Meadows this season, it was Ireland’s Darragh Kenny who won Wednesday’s Prize of StädteRegion Aachen 1.50 competition in memory of Landrat Hermann-Josef Pütz aboard Picolo (Diamant De Semilly x Alme). Coming in half way through the fifty-strong combinations on the start list, Kenny rode an outstanding second round to earn a time of 29.78 seconds pushing Brazil’s Doda de Miranda, winner of the Preis des Handwerks earlier today and AD Nouvelle Europe Z (Nelson Z x Jimtown) down to second position with their time of 30.68 seconds. Third place went to Canada’s Eric Lamaze riding Artisan Farm’s Fine Lady 5 (Forsyth x Drosselklang II), who earned a time of 31.13 seconds.
“It is my first time here in Aachen and now immediately this victory. This is great” said Darragh Kenny today. Kenny bought Picolo three years ago in France from Cedric Angot. “When I saw him for the first time, it was love at first sight” said Kenny who won four major victories at Spruce Meados in the previous six weeks leading up to CHIO Aachen. Kenny flew one week ago from the USA where he lives and trains, to Europe and will remain for about six months. With so many victories under his belt this season, one can wonder whether the young Irishman will be named for Ireland’s Team at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy in September.
