Living-legend John Whitaker made the Grand Prix of Amsterdam his second big win for his week in the Netherlands, taking home the Anemone Horse Trucks Grand Prix of Amsterdam. Riding the stunning 11 year old bay stallion Argento, the pair delivered a tremendous double clear to take home the win in front of a cheering Dutch crowd. Earning his second win of the week, John and Argento won on Friday as well.
John Whitaker and Argento win big in Amsterdam
Dutch rider Gert Jan Bruggink finished second on Primeval Dejavu while Ireland’s young rising talent 24 year-old Alex Duffy delivered two impressive rounds to finish third on Living The Dream. Thirteen riders qualified through to the jump-off, including Belgium’s Jos Lansink and Ukraine’s Katharine Offel. Faults were spread out, but many earned frustrating faults in the triple combination.
The first clear in the competitive jump-off came from Ireland’s Alex Duffy aboard Living The Dream. The young talent produced a beautiful first round, to return to the jump off and put pressure on his fellow riders with a time of 39.58 seconds. Robert Whitaker, son of John Whitaker, was the second rider in the jump off aboard Catwalk IV, but unfortunately the second element in the combination came down. Belgium’s Jos Lansink delivered yet another flawless round with a time of 39.83 seconds. Belgium’s Gudrun Pattet and the Netherland’s Jeroen Dubbeldam followed with unfortunate faults. The Ukraine’s Katharina Offel delivered a strong clear aboard B Once Z to slide into third position.
Britain’s John Whitaker would follow half way through the jump off. Displaying his years of experience, John executed a super turn back to the combination with an excellent pace through out meant that John could take the lead with a time of 38.69 seconds. Thus, shaving 0.89 off of Alex Duffy’s time. Truly a performance of experience and tremendous skill.
The Netherland’s Wout-Jan van der Schans attempted to keep home hopes alive, had a single fence down while Dutch rider Gert Jan Bruggink stepped up to the challenge, to position himself right behind John, in second place. Leopold van Asten and VDL Groep Zidane earned the fastest round of the day with a time of 37.14 seconds, but at the expense of the final fence. The final riders were unable to shift the top four positions. It would prove to be yet another victory for the living legend, John Whitaker. Just one more to add to the long, long list.
