The United States’ Lauren Hough began her week at Jumping Mechelen CSI5*-W in Mechelen, Belgium with a win. On Tuesday, December 27, 2016, she was victorious in the €15,000 Land Rover Masters 1.50m, a uniquely formatted class with just ten riders entered, and only six fences on course.

Each rider chose a fence to be raised before their started their course, and the following riders all tried to jump clear, or be eliminated over four rounds.

Hough rode Waterford, a 13-year-old KWPN gelding (Coolcorron Cool Diamond x Julio Mariner XX) that is owned by Laura and Meredith Mateo. She foiled a win by the hometown stars by jumping the final round in 30.24 seconds, much faster than the 2nd and 3rd place timed scored by Belgian stars Nicola and Olivier Philippaerts, respectively. Belgium’s Jerome Guery came 4th after being eliminated in the third round.

Hough won a brand new Land Rover along with her first place prize money check, giving her week a fortuitous start indeed.
